Sovrin Plastics remains the only company in
the UK to have invested in Battenfeld's micromolding
technology for commercial production. There are three others
operational in this country, but all used for R & D purposes.
The firm invested £100'000 in the micromolding
system in September 2000. Sales Manager Peter Wigmore explains:
"Some of our customers were asking us to make some very
small components and we were not able to do it on our existing
moulding machines. So we started looking at small injection machines
and the market for micromoldings. It became clear there was
significant potential; the fibre optics and medical device areas
were just two."
Sovrin's micromolding manufacturing system
operates within its own cleanroom unit. The mouldings produced
typically weigh below 0.25 gms and down into
single figures of milligrams with tolerances of single figure
microns.
